I spent my Fine Art degree contemplating conceptual ideas of the landscape and our connection as humans to it. Most of the time I considered my own personal connection with the natural world around me. Moving from an academic creative space into the working world altered my artwork and perception of what it is to be an artist – sometimes it is just about finding the time to create work you enjoy looking at. For me, that has always been the landscape.
I find nowadays that my work is a combination of the two. I enjoy creating artwork that is conventionally pleasing to a wider audience and can support me creatively, whilst also engaging with conceptual projects surrounding climate change and our ever-changing landscape.
My work on display at the Greenhouse spans the 6 years since completing my degree, and it may seem incohesive, but landscape and nature is at the heart of it all. I think it is also a depiction of what it is to pursue an artistic career in the current climate.
